Creating Access Maps

Your first task is to determine what your purpose is and what information you need. What sort of map you will be creating and what sort of information will you need to accomplish this task? There will be a list of useful coverages in Appendix I. What are you trying to show with this map? What info do you need to include? There are examples of the Karluk maps in the Appendix as well.

For this Access map you will need general physical information such as the coastline, lakes, and rivers as well as land status and easement info. The creation and addition of these themes will be the objective here.

  1. Creating a folder to store the project. Create a folder on your C: or D: drive that you will save all information in; call it "Karluk" or "GIStutorial" or whatever you like.

  2. Open ArcView. 2x on the icon or go to Start: Program Files: ESRI: ArcView.

  3. Saving the project file.  File; save project as; to save the project to the folder you created as "Kar_access.apr". 

  4. Creating a new view.  Highlight the "Views" icon in Kar_access.apr and click the "New" button (at right). When it comes up, maximize and View; Properties. Rename the view from "View1" to "Karluk Access View" and set map unit to meters. If you have ArcView 3.1, the program will probably automatically ask to "Show this window when ArcView GIS starts"; click yes. If this annoys you uncheck the box that gets rid of this feature.  Maximize the view.
