Appendix 5: Tricks of the Trade

Powertoys are a group of unsupported programs put together by Microsoft techies to fill some gaps in the Windows operating system.  For more information go to     Go to tutorial\programs\powertoys folder, into a temp folder by doubleclicking it. Find install.inf, right click, install. This will install the "sendto" menu. Making a shortcut to the Notepad or Word programs is helpful in working with the SAS or *.apr files that you have to edit. In the SAS functions you must perform for ISF, you have to edit files normally named *.dta, a format which isn’t usually associated with anything in Win95 or NT. This technique is also helpful when you are editing *.apr files when source data are moved. Word is the editor for this. To create these shortcuts;

• Open explorer.
• Go to c:/windows.
• Find "Notepad.exe".
• Drag it to the desktop .. there should be a plus on the icon while you are dragging it. If it is named "Shortcut to Notepad.exe" click it once, hit F2, and rename it "Notepad".
• In explorer, go to c:/windows/sendto.
• Drag the notepad shortcut from the desktop to the "sendto" folder.

You can use the same technique for making "sendto" shortcuts for any program or folder.

One large problem with ArcView is that it is difficult to "package" a project file for the purpose of sending it to someone else.  ArcView adds themes and shape files from various locations on networks and hard drives, creating views and layouts that can be exported as image files.  However, if you would like to send the project file to colleagues at another location you will have to perform some annoying repetitive tasks.  finish this.
